Is anybody able to read Josh's notes at 2:57 ? I can't quite make it out. I had a moment last night when I finally made peace with what I experienced in the theater last week. Midsommar wasn't much of a horror movie is such an unbelievable take to me. it's the most horrifying movie i've ever seen in my life. i've never been as unsettled, uncomfortable, and dreading every single second as it dragged on in a perpetual state of building tension, as i have while watching this movie. when i was done watching it, i wanted to puke. her smile at the end made my stomach twist in disgust. i've never reacted like that to any movie. maybe it's just a me thing, maybe the movie managed to get uniquely under my skin in a way that most people didn't experience, but i can't ever watch it again. it was a harrowing experience. it's probably the only horror movie i've ever watched that literally horrified me. (i have not seen hereditary and now i think i probably never will) your analysis basically saying that the people of the death cult were fascists? yeah. now i'm ready to barf.

watch online megavideo. Midsommar spoilers. This film was so. overtly bizarre. This movie is possibly my favourite movie of all time. Horror has turned into a shitshow and people have become convinced that jump scares denote how scary a horror movie is. That is complete bullshit it denotes how fucking lazy it is. Movies like the Conjuring and Annabelle and all those shitty others like the Gallows, Happy Death Day, etc. arent real horror they are jump scare movies. Midsommar, Hereditary, The Lighthouse and The Witch are genuine horrors that fill you with unease and fear. Dont rely on jump scares at all. They are directorial masterpieces and I hope thousands of future directors use them as inspiration as I will. They are a breath of fresh air and movies I can actually get invested in as I know its not going to have a bullshit ending where everything is right and okay and the good guys banish the spirit. I want unpredictability because modern horror is boring and its dying. Directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are the saviours of the genre. I could go into depth of how you missed the point on almost everything. The themes of family and community, the detrimental mindset of the anthropologist at times and the other themes shown throughout the movie but you probably get those comments on here all the time. This is a movie that sure isnt for everyone but is new, its different and its trying not to be those fucking terrible mainstream horrors. And I love that for it and I aspire to write and direct something even half as good as Midsommar.

Ari Aster's second film, following last years "Hereditary" is another divisive movie that sits roughly in the horror genre, without ever really being scary and is probably going to bore as many people as it enthrals.
Dani (Florence Pugh) suffers a horrific family tragedy which encourages her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) to offer her the chance to join them on a trip to Sweden, to see a once in a lifetime festival on a remote agricultural commune. Dani's shaky relationship with Christian, coupled with the culture shock of this isolated community unsettles her but could darker forces be at work.
It's barely a spoiler to say, yes. All is not what it seems in the idyllic village. You'll be able to predict the plot of "Midsommar" as it doesn't deviate very much from its template of a being a trippier version of "The Wicker Man. That isn't the point, there's a sense of inevitability about what happens and "Midsommar" is very happy about taking it's time to get there. This will, I'm sure, alienate some of the audience, it's a film about aesthetics and atmosphere, rather than twist and jumps, and I would understand anyone whose takeaway about the film was that they were bored.
A lot of credit need to go to the central performances of the leads. Though not expressly trying to, I am seeing everything that Florence Pugh is doing and I continue to be impressed with her versatility and vulnerability. Jack Reynor, who I'd previously only seen in the Transformers movie, is excellent too, fearless both in his willingness to do some of the scenes and to not try and redeem his character of his underlying resentment towards Dani. The cinematography is excellent, as is the use of sometimes subtle CGI to enhance backgrounds or illustrate the use of hallucinogenics.
Admittedly, the idea of sitting through it again doesn't seem particularly appealing now, which is why my review score isn't as glowing as it might have seemed from the comments so far, but I will keep my eyes open for Aster next film.
